📊 Project Selection Scoring Calculator
Evaluate and prioritize projects using weighted criteria methodology
🎯 What is Project Selection Scoring?
Project Selection Scoring is a systematic approach to evaluating and prioritizing multiple projects based on weighted criteria. This methodology helps organizations make objective, data-driven decisions about which projects to pursue when resources are limited.
💡 Why This Matters
Without a structured approach, project selection often becomes subjective, political, or based on whoever speaks loudest. Weighted scoring brings objectivity, transparency, and consistency to the decision-making process.
📊 How Weighted Scoring Works
1. Define Criteria
Identify the factors that matter most to your organization (e.g., Strategic Alignment, ROI, Risk, Resource Availability).
2. Assign Weights
Allocate percentage weights to each criterion based on importance. Weights must total 100%.
3. Score Projects
Rate each project on a 0-10 scale for every criterion based on how well it performs.
4. Calculate Rankings
The calculator automatically computes weighted scores: (Score × Weight) for each criterion, then sums them up.
🎓 Scoring Scale (0-10)
- 9-10: Exceptional - Far exceeds expectations or requirements
- 7-8: Very Good - Clearly exceeds expectations
- 5-6: Good - Meets expectations adequately
- 3-4: Fair - Partially meets expectations, has concerns
- 0-2: Poor - Does not meet expectations or has major issues
🚀 How to Use This Calculator
Step 1: Define Your Criteria
In the Calculator tab, set up your selection criteria. Common criteria include:
- Strategic Alignment: How well does it support organizational goals?
- Financial Impact: Expected ROI, cost savings, or revenue generation
- Resource Availability: Do we have the people, budget, and tools?
- Implementation Complexity: How difficult is it to execute? (Lower score = more complex)
- Risk Level: How risky is this project? (Lower score = higher risk)
- Time to Value: How quickly will we see benefits?
Step 2: Assign Weights
Give each criterion a weight percentage. More important criteria get higher weights. Total must equal 100%.
Step 3: Add Projects
Enter your candidate projects and score each one (0-10) for every criterion.
Step 4: Review Rankings
Switch to the Results tab to see projects ranked by weighted score. The highest-scoring project should typically be prioritized.
✨ Pro Tips
Get Stakeholder Input: Have multiple people score independently, then average the results for objectivity.
Be Consistent: Define what each score level means for each criterion before starting.
Document Rationale: Use the Excel export to document why projects received specific scores.
Review Regularly: Project priorities change - reassess quarterly or when new information emerges.
Selection Criteria
Define the factors that will be used to evaluate projects. Assign weights based on importance (must total 100%).
